Major steps involved in the construction of achievement test

1.      Planning

2.      Design of the test

3.      Blue print of the test

4.      Writing of test items

5.      Scoring key and marking scheme

6.      Question wise analysis

1. Planning of test

It is all about the planning a test, in this the objectives of a test are fixed. It is most important to have an aim of the test, on the basis of which we can assume the outcomes of the test.

  • Objective of the Test
  • Determine the maximum time and maximum marks.

2. Preparation of a design for the test

Test design is a process that describes “how” testing should be done. It includes processes for the identifying test cases by enumerating steps of the defined test conditions. Some of the important factors to be considered in design are as follow-

Important factors to be considered in design for the test are:

    • Weightage to objectives
    • Weightage to content
    • Weightage to form of questions
    • Weightage to difficulty level.

4. Writing of items

  • The paper setter write items according to the blue print.
  • The difficulty level has to be considered while writing the items.
  • It should also checked whether all the questions included can be answered within the time allotted.
  • It is advisable to arrange the questions in the order of their difficulty level.

5. Preparation of the scoring key and marking scheme

  • In the case of objective type items where the answers are in the form of some letters or other symbol a scoring key is prepared.

Type of test items

TYPE OF TEST ITEMS: An item is the basic unit of interaction on a test. What we often call a test  question  is more properly known as an  item ,  since it may not be worded as an actual question. The student's feedback is also more properly known as a  response  rather than an  answer , but we won't get too particular on that point. Items can be written in various formats, including multiple choice, matching, true/false, short answer, and essay. We will discuss some of these formats in another article. Since items are the actual points of interaction of students with the test, item quality is probably the most recognizable indicator of the overall quality of the test. High quality  test items  take time and effort to write, but are essential to a valid test. Items must test skills and knowledge of the subject at hand, not the student's test taking  skills.
